Middle School and Upper School Choral Music Teacher

Job Description

The Steward School seeks an enthusiastic and committed Middle School/Upper School Choral Music Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. The candidate will have a strong background in music education and a commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. This is a full-time, benefited faculty position reporting to the Director of Middle School, with a dotted-line report to the Director of Upper School.

 

Responsibilities:

●       This position will teach 6th-, 7th-, 8th-grade, and Upper School sections.

●       The preferred candidate will:

○       Develop and implement a choral curriculum that meets educational and school standards.

○       Teach vocal techniques and music theory to students of varying skill levels.

○       Select and arrange music repertoire for choir performances.

○       Prepare students for concerts, competitions, and other public performances, including events scheduled outside of traditional school hours, such as evening and weekend concerts.

○       Conduct regular rehearsals to enhance students’ musical abilities and ensemble cohesion.

○       Collaborate with other music and theatre teachers and school staff for school events.

○       Post and maintain curriculum, syllabi, and grades.

○       Demonstrate familiarity with differentiated learning instruction.

○       Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.

●       This position includes other duties as assigned by the Division Directors.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

●       Bachelor’s degree in music education or related field.

●       The preferred candidate will have:

○       Master’s degree in music education or related subject/or Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate.

○       Previous experience teaching chorus at the middle school and high school levels.

○       Strong knowledge of vocal techniques, choral literature, and vocal pedagogy.

○       Proficiency in playing piano or other accompaniment instruments.

○       Proficiency in reading and interpreting musical scores

○       Experience in organizing and directing choral performances and events.

○       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

○       Ability to inspire and motivate students of all backgrounds and skill levels.
