Upper School Environmental Science and Chemistry Teacher

Job Description

Gaston Day School is an independent, coeducational day school for 500 students in grades PS-12.

 This posting is for a full-time upper/high school environmental science and honors chemistry teacher. A competitive candidate will be well-versed in teaching Honors Chemistry and CP and Honors Environmental Science through hands-on inquiry activities, note-taking, class discussions, research projects, and group work. Applicants should be comfortable using and integrating technology into lessons in a 1:1 laptop environment. Classes will include Honors Chemistry, CP Environmental Science, and Honors Environmental Science, and a potential elective course based on individual expertise and student interest. 

The Gaston Day School Honors Chemistry and CP and Honors Environmental Science teacher instructs students in science concepts that align with the Next Generation Science Standards for Chemistry and Environmental Science, incorporating the Science Practices and Cross-cutting concepts. In addition to supervising students in academic classes, GDS Upper School teachers supervise students during other school duties. Gaston Day teachers demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all Gaston Day students and the best interests of the school as a whole.

 

Broad responsibilities:

  • Instruct students in science in accordance with curriculum requirements and objectives, effectively using technology, textbooks, and other instructional materials as appropriate.

  • Establish and actively maintain a class environment that honors excellence in learning and values respectful interaction between and among students.

  • Work with students to develop a love of learning, academic integrity, and a thoughtful work ethic.

  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments that integrate project-based learning opportunities.

  • Participate as an active team member within the Science Department, the Upper School faculty, and the school community.

  • Support and model the Upper School’s advisory program and social contract.

Reporting:

The Upper School science teacher will report to the Head of Upper School and the Science Department Chair.

 

Experience and education requirements:

A degree in science or a related field from an accredited institution is required, and an advanced degree is preferred.  Three+ years teaching high school chemistry and environmental sciences is also preferred.
