JOB DESCRIPTION: History instructor, grades 6 - 8
JOB SUMMARY: The Hickory Day School middle-school history/humanities instructor teaches three or four classes each day to students in grades 6 through 8. The instructor reports to the Head of School and works collaboratively with all members of the middle-school faculty and staff. Other duties throughout the day may include supervising a study hall, serving as an academic-assist resource, filling in for an absent colleague, coaching and/or sponsoring a team/club, or other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND DESCRIPTION:
· A minimum of an undergraduate degree in history, social sciences, education, or related fields is required. North Carolina teacher certification is highly desired.
· Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the school community.
· Love of children and education along with the ability to deal with middle-school students effectively and inspirationally in a caring, compassionate, and supportive manner.
· Willingness to support the mission, beliefs, and practices of Hickory Day School.
· A commitment to ongoing professional development in the fields of both education and history/humanities.
· Creation of meaningful and challenging lessons that reinforce classroom curricula and encourage students to expand their horizons and global perspectives.
· Ancillary duties including, but not limited to, participation in all faculty/staff meetings, teacher work days, school events, student assessment, weekly classroom communications, and student supervision. The normal teacher workday is 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
· Supervision/coaching of at least extracurricular or athletic activity
· Professional demeanor and decorum are required at all times.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
· Previous experience in a school setting.
· North Carolina (or other state) teacher licensure.
SALARY RANGE: $36 K and up depending on education, experience, and qualifications. Any job offer is contingent upon a clean background check.
