Position Overview

The Director of Development leads and advances The Friends School of Atlanta’s philanthropic efforts in support of the school’s mission and long-term sustainability. Rooted in the values of community, stewardship, and shared responsibility, this role cultivates meaningful relationships with families, alumni, trustees, foundations and community partners to inspire investment in the life and future of the school. Working in close partnership with the Head of School and the Board of Trustees, the Director of Development oversees the school’s fundraising strategy, including the Annual Fund, major gifts, grant writing and donor stewardship. Through thoughtful engagement and clear communication, the Director of Development helps strengthen a culture of generosity and partnership that supports the educational experience of every student at The Friends School of Atlanta. 

Details & Compensation

  • Employment Type: Part time (12-month), Exempt

  • Pay Range: Commensurate with experience

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Champion initiatives that promote inclusivity, diversity and social justice within and beyond our school walls.

  • Support parent/family community events (e.g., Fall & Spring Fundraisers,  Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Back to School Night, etc.)  

  • Model and promote expectations aligned with the school’s values and Quaker ethos

  • Collaborate with colleagues to support community and school initiatives

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with the mission and strategic priorities of The Friends School of Atlanta.

  • Partner closely with the Head of School to cultivate and steward relationships with donors, families, alumni and community partners.

  • Lead the planning and execution of the Annual Fund and other giving initiatives that engage the broader school community.

  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities and prepare proposals to foundations and corporate partners.

  • Coordinate donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and communications that strengthen long-term relationships with supporters.

  • Maintain accurate donor records and generate development reports through the school’s development database system.

  • Prepare development updates, reports and presentations for the Head of School and the Board of Trustees.

  • Ensure the accurate processing, acknowledgment and stewardship of gifts to the school.

  • Partner with the Business Office to ensure accurate reporting and tracking of philanthropic contributions.

  • Work collaboratively with the Board Development Committee to advance fundraising priorities and support trustee engagement in development efforts.

  • Provide training and guidance to trustees and volunteer leaders to strengthen the school’s culture of philanthropy.

  • Support the broader life of the school and perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications

  • Educational and Experience: 

    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.

  • Skills, Knowledge & Attributes:

    • Demonstrated success in fundraising, advancement or development leadership, ideally within an independent school environment.

    • Experience with development database systems (Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge preferred).

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build authentic relationships.

    • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and collaborative skills.
