Job Description

Mason Preparatory is an independent school, Pre-K through 8th grade, dedicated to educating the whole child through strong relationships, academic excellence, and an engaging, student-centered learning environment. We are seeking a 5th/6th Grade English Teacher to join our collaborative and supportive faculty team. 

Position Details:
Title: 5th/6th Grade English Teacher
Classification: Exempt (Salary) – DOE
Reports to: Head of School
Schedule: Schedule: Full-Time; 7:30 am - 3:30 pm
Occasional evenings or weekends may be required for school events.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in English, Education, or a related field required
  • State teaching license required
  • Proficient knowledge of curriculum and effective instructional practices, specifically related to grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension required
  • Training in Orton-Gillingham or other Science of Reading-aligned structured literacy approach (e.g., Wilson, LETRS, or comparable certification) strongly preferred
  • Must have strong knowledge of:
    • Grammar and mechanics (parts of speech, sentence structure, agreement, punctuation, capitalization, and usage)
    • Phrases, clauses, verbals, and verb tenses
    • Writing process and composition skills
    • Narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive writing
    • Vocabulary development through word study (roots, prefixes, and suffixes)
    • Research, source evaluation, note-taking, and MLA citation
    • Editing, proofreading, and revision strategies and methods (including MLA formatting)
    • Differentiated instruction to support diverse learners, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Head of School, 5th/6th Grade English Teachers will:

  • Provide high-quality classroom instruction aligned with South Carolina state standards while maintaining a safe, structured, and positive learning environment
  • Plan and deliver creative, multi-sensory lessons (kinesthetic, tactile, auditory, and visual).
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with students, families, colleagues, and administrators.
  • Implement discipline policies with fairness and consistency.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Actively participate in school life, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Comply with all Mason Preparatory School policies and procedures as outlined in faculty, student, and employee handbooks.
