A. Daily Classroom Responsibilities
Maintain a clean and safe classroom setting
Provide basic first aid as necessary and use the school’s crisis response protocols for emergencies
Serve on detention, lunch, and campus supervision/bus duty
B. Instructional Process
Plan and implement a program of instruction that adheres to the philosophy, goals, and objectives of IWA.
Make purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching using varied strategies and maximize time on task. Provide lesson plans to the Assistant Head of Middle and Upper School on a weekly basis.
Provide two copies of emergency lesson plans. One copy will be left in the office and one copy will be stored with the Assistant Head for the Middle or Upper School.
Organize and implement class field trips.
Plan and implement a program of study designed to meet and uphold the mission of the school and the curriculum. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and using a variety of methods.
Encourage student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.
Provide progress and interim reports using FACTS and maintain contact with parents through conferences, school-approved electronic communications, phone calls, notes, newsletters, and graded papers.
Recognize learning problems and offer academic support where possible.
Demonstrate a strong grasp of subject matter.
C. Curriculum Development
Keep current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory and be willing to share
knowledge for continual improvement of the school's curriculum.
Assist in the ongoing curriculum revision process, including the revision of written courses of study and the selection of textbooks.
Become acquainted with supplemental resources and cross-curricular connections beneficial to students and as an extension of regular classroom activities.
D. Classroom Management
Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.
Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Share responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in all areas of the school, which includes bus and recess duty.
E. Public Relations
Uphold and enforce board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations. Be supportive of them in public.
Demonstrate personal and professional integrity.
Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance, adherence to requirements mandated by the administration, and appropriate use of planning and conference time.
Strive to communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public in word and deed.
Maintain contact and work cooperatively with parents to strengthen the educational experience for their children.
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other staff members.
F. Professional Growth
Continue professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or coursework at institutions of higher learning.
Maintain Virginia State Licensure
Maintain membership in appropriate professional organizations.
Cooperate with the administration in the planning of appropriate in-service training.
Attend staff, department, and committee meetings as necessary.
G. Student Evaluation
Evaluate the accomplishments of students on a regular basis using multiple assessment methods such as teacher-made tests, samples of students' work, mastery skill check lists, criterion-referenced tests, and norm-referenced tests.
Make appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as a result of assessments.
Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws, and help keep permanent records up to date.
H. Extra-Curricular Activities
Participates in committee meetings as assigned by the administration.
Serves as sponsor of academic clubs or teams as assigned by the administration.

Isle of Wight Academy is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational, nonprofit day school. The philosophy of Isle of Wight Academy is to accept students of average or above average ability and develop them to their fullest potential. The school emphasizes honor, integrity, social development, and citizenship of its students.
K-7 students study math, English, history, reading, science, and writing. They also participate in an enrichment program consisting of: art, band, STEM, music, physical education, leadership, and public speaking. Students in grades 8-12 follow a college preparatory program. Advanced Placement and Dual Credit offerings allow students to accumulate 40+ college credits.
Isle of Wight Academy also offer a complete varsity, junior varsity, and middle school (partial) athletic program. Football, basketball (boys and girls), volleyball (girls), baseball (boys) and softball (girls), co-ed golf, co-ed soccer, cross country (boys and girls), indoor/outdoor track (boys and girls), and fall and winter cheerleading are offered yearly. IWA also offers extracurricular activities in student government (SCO), the National Honor Society, service clubs, science clubs, scholastic teams, and music and drama programs.
